7-0 Demons stay hot

Game 6: Cleveland Demons 25, Grand Valley State Box LC 3

The development of the Cleveland Demons has been fun to watch this season as the Demons beat the visiting Grand Valley State Box LC, 25-3 at the NC Soccer Club of Hudson and pushed their record to 6-0. Offensively, Cleveland was on fire. Even though Grand Valley scored first, the Demons rallied with 7 first quarter goals and the onslaught was on. By half-time, the home team carried a 14-3 lead. A slow down approach to the third quarter had the Demons scoring just 4 goals, but the final period saw the offense and transition runners penetrate and score 7 more goals to complete the game. The offensive player of the game was Steve Jones with 6 goals and 5 assists. He was a man on a mission throughout the game with his acrobatic dive shots and off-ball vision. Veteran forward, David Blue scored 5 goals and assisted on 3 others. Brandon Sallee scored 6 goals (including his patented flying squirrel shot). Hans Rydquist was balanced with his 3 goals and 3 assists. Brian Lalley, playing in his first game of the season, scored 4 goals and added 2 assists. Forward, Tyler Murphy, rounded out the offensive scoring with 1 goal and 2 assists. Specialist, Sam Carmony, was a dominating force in the face-off circle.

The defensive approach of the Demons all season has been to play smart, aggressive, and physical defense, but keep it clean and stay out of the box. Jon Hurm (1 assist), Eli George (1 assist), Matt Milano (1 assist), Kevin Werner, Mark Sertich, Brian Holzheimer, and Dan Clem have been anchoring the backline all season and continue to bring outstanding efforts each week. Rory Jeffers (2 assists) and Seth Wagner (1 assist) were solid in the transition game again as well. Goaltender, Bobby Lyle, once again showed he is becoming one of the top goalies in the CILL with his efforts in the cage and even recorded an assist as well.

The Demons wanted to thank John Rydquist, Don Davis, Matt Zelich, Mitch Gray, Elliot Wasbotten, Merrick Widdoes, and Matt Wysmierski for their help in working the game. Cleveland will travel to the CILL Championship weekend on September 26-27 in Pittsburgh.
